Aside from celebrating with the family, the holiday means bonuses and 13th-month pay. However, that doesn’t mean you can spend on whatever you want. It is always wise to put the extra money you will receive this season into good use. Appliances are what you could spend them on, as there is a high likelihood that you will use them frequently. Refrigerators, for example, are always present in every household. They work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When was the last time you replaced your fridge? If your answer is "never," then it may be time to get a new one. There are many available fridge options in the market, such as direct cool, light commercial, and no frost refrigerator. Before you buy, it’s always best to check the functions, features, and refrigerator prices in the Philippines.
When shopping for a new ref, remember that not all of them are the same. A distinction would be whether it’s direct cool, also called “manual or semi-automatic defrost,” or no frost. A direct cool refrigerator uses a traditional cooling system that relies on natural convection to make its inside cold. On the other hand, a no frost fridge uses fans that prevent ice from building up, hence the name. Which one to choose depends on your needs, as they both offer advantages. One is not better than the other. For example, direct cool refrigerators are affordable, so they are recommended for businesses. No frost refrigerators also have many benefits, which we will discuss below.
To fully appreciate a no frost fridge, we have to understand how it works. To prevent ice from building up inside the unit, it utilizes three important parts: a timer, a heating coil, and a temperature sensor. With the timer, the unit turns on the heating coils at regular intervals, usually every six (6) hours depending on the brand or model. The heating coils, which are within the freezer coils, melt the ice. Then, the temperature sensor goes to work. When the temperature goes beyond 0 degrees Celsius, it turns off the heater. Then, the cycle goes on.
A no frost ref offers a lot of advantages, but it also has some downsides. Consider them carefully before deciding to buy one.
Defrosting can be a tedious task, as it requires you to schedule time to unplug the unit and wait for the ice to melt. You can make this process faster by using a fan to melt the ice, while some get creative and use a blow dryer. With a no frost refrigerator, you don’t have to worry about ice build-ups ever.
Ice build-ups may affect the quality and taste of fruits and vegetables, especially if it’s not arranged properly. With a no frost refrigerator, you can ensure that you have fresh and tasty ingredients for your salad.
Ice build-ups take the space meant for your food items. With a no frost refrigerator, you can maximize your unit’s space, which keeps your fridge more organized.
You may need to save up more as a no frost fridge costs more than a direct cool ref. Good thing though that many no frost refs are energy efficient, so you still save on electricity costs.
If you’re particular about the appliance’s noise, then a no frost refrigerator may not be for you. Compared to other refrigerator types, some no frost fridges create a hissing or buzzing sound due to their compressor. However, this may not be a big deal, since the noise level is usually minimal.
